For this demonstration I have used a Lunker City Sluggo 4.5inch and Decoy Rock Fish Worm hook size 1/0. For a rough guide to hook size in relation to soft plastic length see ‘A guide to hook sizes for soft plastics’.
Weed less rigging is the way forward with soft plastic lures. With reduced chances of snagging, this style allows you to fish over rough, weedy ground where those big fish are likely to be lurking.
What you need:
- Soft plastic of choice
- Weed less hook to match the lure size
Take your weed less hook and insert the point into the front of your soft plastic lure.
Push the point though the bottom or underside of the lure and continue until you reach the bend or kink in the hook.
Rotate the hook so the point is now sitting along the top of the lure. Your hook will now be the correct way up.
Mark the point where the hook will exit the top of the lure with your thumb or finger.
Now push the hook point through the lure body. It should now be sitting flush with the top surface of the lure.
To ensure the hook point does not snag, bury the point into the soft plastic. Remember not to bury it too much as this may prevent the hook to set properly when a fish hits.
